In rural Kenya, access to healthcare is severely limited, and mental health carries a heavy social stigma. Enchilai works to change both. In 2024, founder Hellen and her team opened the Enchilai Community Centre: the first centre in the region dedicated specifically to mental health. It is a real place where counselling, training and community building come together. People can pay for a therapy session, but the centre also hosts group sessions and community gatherings, deliberately designed to chip away at the stigma that keeps so many people from seeking help.
So far, Enchilai has achieved a remarkable amount with a small budget, driven largely by Hellen and a committed group of volunteers. The next step is building financial sustainability – developing a fundraising strategy and generating a stable income of their own. De Boomgaard's support is a contribution to exactly that.
