In april 2022, the magazine was banned by the Russian Government, primarily due to its support for the LGBTQIA+ community. It immediately lost half of its readership in Russia as well as its advertising revenue. The funding will help support their coverage of the unprecedented challenges faced by women and vulnerable or marginalized groups in the post-Soviet space against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine.
In particular, Wonderzine wants to focus on topics that are often ignored by mainstream media but that have far-reaching social consequences. They will continue to examine how key issues such as gender politics, health, education, and the environment affect the lives of ordinary citizens in the Russian-speaking world.
