Recycling of plastics into building materials and furniture - EUR 21,000 (28 May 2024)
Biocomp Nepal started with the collection and composting of organic waste, this way reducing the emissions of greenhouse gasses. With help of a World Bank grant Biocomp entered into processing of plastic waste from the mountain rivers into building materials. De Boomgaard funded extra high-quality staff, training for women and youth and working capital. The construction of the recycling factory in Jeetpur Simara will be finished and production started in the first quarter of 2025.
Plastic recycling has a significant social and environmental impact. The collection chain is embedded in local communities and helps many women informal waste workers to increase their income. Pollution in rivers is tackled, providing immediate positive climate effects for example through reduced burning of plastic waste. The project is structured as a business activity with healthy profit prospects with a lasting positive effect.
The Biocomp project includes river cleanup campaigns and the Zero Waste at Schools (ZWAS) program too. Female Informal Waste Workers who clean up the rivers receive training focused on resilience, psychological wellbeing and the required protection equipment to work in a hazardous environment. This is to reduce accidents and to cope with harassment.
